Census Bureau Releases 2016 Population Estimates

The American Community Survey recently released 2016 population estimates for municipalities and counties. Between 2015 and 2016, North Carolina’s population grew by 1.1% (111,602 people). And between 2010 and 2016, the state’s population grew by 6.2% (587,873 people).


The state exceeded the country’s percentage growth as a whole. Between 2015 and 2016, the U.S. grew by 0.7% (2,230,895), and by 4.5% between 2010 and 2016.

Here are the ten counties (10,000 or more in population) that experienced the most growth by percentage from 2015 to 2016:

And ten North Carolina counties (10,000 or more in population) were among the top 100 in the country in growth from 2010 to 2016:


34 North Carolina counties lost population between 2015 and 2016 and 66 counties gained residents, with Brunswick County seeing the largest percentage gain of 3.5% (4,331 people).
